Ring Alarm Pro FAQs

Learn about set up, subscriptions and backup power and internet for your Ring Alarm Pro.

What is Ring Alarm Pro?

Ring Alarm Pro includes a Ring Alarm for trusted physical security, and an eero wifi router3 for fast wifi and network security. Unlike traditional home security systems, Ring Alarm Pro also offers optional layers of backup protection to help stay connected in case the power or internet goes out. By combining Alarm Pro with a Ring Protect Pro subscription, you have more protection, and more ways to secure your home.

Your Alarm Pro Base Station includes both Z-Wave and wifi technology, so you can customize your Alarm Pro experience by adding Ring Doorbells, cameras, and Ring Alarm security devices, as well as smart home accessories like compatible smart locks.*
.

*Ring Alarm and all Ring Alarm accessories require a subscription for digital notifications, in-app features, digital arming/disarming, and integration with other Ring, Echo, and third party products. Subscription sold separately. View ring.com/protect-plans for pricing and details.

Is it easy to set up Ring Alarm Pro?

Ring Alarm Pro is easy to set up, and no professional installation is required. You'll use the Ring app to complete the initial Ring Alarm Pro setup, and then we'll direct you to the eero app to set up or log in to your account and create a wifi network.

After completing setup, you can choose to add Ring cameras, alarm security devices, compatible smart home devices, and enroll in 24/7 Alarm Professional Monitoring.5

Which Ring Devices work with Alarm Pro?

Ring Alarm Pro works with a wide range of devices:

Ring Alarm security devices, including Contact Sensors, Motion Detectors, Keypads and Range Extenders (both 1st gen and 2nd gen), which connect via Z-Wave.
Ring Video Doorbells and Cameras connect via wifi.

Are all Ring Alarm security devices compatible with Ring Alarm Pro?

Yes. All Ring Alarm (1st and 2nd Gen) security devices are compatible with Alarm Pro, including Contact Sensors, Motion Detectors, Keypads and Range Extenders. You can also use Ring Alarm accessories, including Flood & Freeze Sensors, Smoke & CO Listeners,7 and Panic Buttons.

Do I still need my wifi router if I use Alarm Pro?

No. Ring Alarm Pro has a built-in eero wifi3 router that connects directly to your modem. Wifi setup is simple using the eero app. You can create a secure wifi mesh network at your location in minutes, and use it to connect any wifi device to the internet. Ring Alarm Pro supports fast wifi, and covers an area of up to 1500 sq. ft.

Ring Alarm Pro is designed to be used as the gateway, or primary router, on your home network. This diagram shows how to correctly set up your Alarm Pro as the gateway of your home network:

internet_wifi.gif

Alarm Pro will be connected to your modem and the internet using an ethernet cable, but will communicate with the cameras and devices in your home using wifi. You can expand your wifi network at any time by adding eero Extenders. Each adds up to 1500 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing network.3

Will my existing eero products work with Alarm Pro?

Yes. All generations of eero products will work as wifi extenders for your Ring Alarm Pro, but we recommend eero Mesh wifi Extenders,3 which are compatible with Ring Power Packs.

Set up Ring Alarm Pro as your primary internet router or “gateway” (meaning it should be plugged directly into your modem), and then set up your existing eero devices as wifi extenders using the eero app.

Note: We do not recommend using Ring Alarm Pro as a wifi extender for your existing router. Using your Alarm Pro as an extender will prevent you from accessing many of the Ring Protect Pro subscription features, including 24/7 Backup Internet.1

How do I upgrade my Ring Alarm to Ring Alarm Pro?

We've made this step easy. Simply open the Ring app, begin to set up your Ring Alarm Pro, and choose the location which has the Ring Alarm Base Station that you'd like to replace. The app will help you save your Ring Alarm settings and devices, then restore them to your new Alarm Pro Base Station after it's set up on your Ring account.

Which subscription plan can I use with the Ring Alarm Pro?

The Ring Protect Pro subscription is designed for your Alarm Pro. You'll get important security features, including:

24/7 Alarm Professional Monitoring5 to request emergency response
24/7 Backup Internet1 to help keep your Ring video doorbells and cameras, Alarm system[CE4] , and entire wifi network online if the internet goes down. You'll get 3GB of data each month. If you need more, you can opt into Extra Data, and only pay for the data you use.
eero Secure4 for advanced online security.

You'll also get all of the benefits of the other Ring Protect plans, including camera Live View, Two-Way Talk, notifications for Ring cameras, video storage and sharing,6 and Snapshot Capture for Ring cameras, and extended warranties and discounts from Ring.

What is 24/7 Backup Internet and how does it work?

24/7 Backup Internet1 is a feature that keeps your Ring Alarm Pro online using cellular data.

When the internet connection goes down, or if no internet service is available, Alarm Pro switches to 24/7 Backup Internet1 and starts using cellular data to keep the alarm system, eero wifi network, and everything using wifi including Ring cameras connected to the internet.

You need a Ring Protect Pro subscription to use 24/7 Backup Internet,1 and the plan includes 3GB of cellular data every month. You can also opt in to Extra Data, and get more cellular data for $3/1GB. At the end of the month, you'll only pay for the Extra Data that you use.
.

Note: If you do not opt in to Extra Data and use up your 3GB monthly allotment, Alarm Pro will switch over to Alarm Cellular Backup1 if the internet is out, which will keep your Ring Alarm system online with some Ring security features, but 24/7 Backup Internet will not be available to your other devices.

The Protect Pro plan's 3GB of 24/7 Backup Internet
1 data will reset on the first of the billing cycle. You can monitor your data usage in the Ring app.

Does Alarm Pro work when the power goes out?

When the power goes out, you have two options to keep your Ring Alarm Pro on.

1.Alarm Pro has an internal backup battery inside the Base Station that can provide backup power. When using the internal battery, you may have limited access to Alarm features.
2.Ring Power Packs (sold separately) can provide external battery backup for your Alarm Pro. Connect up to four fully-charged Power Packs to a single Alarm Pro to keep it working for hours and all your existing Alarm Pro features will be available.

Ring Power Packs can also be used to provide backup power to your eero Extenders, which will keep your expanded Wi-Fi network up if you lose power.

What happens when the internet goes out?

Your Ring Protect Pro plan offers 24/7 Backup Internet1 when you need it. This means that if the internet goes out, or if you don't have internet service, you can use cellular data to connect all devices on your wifi network to the internet.

The 24/7 Backup Internet1 feature (Ring Protect Pro subscription, sold separately) gives you 3GB of data every month. If you need more, you can opt in to Extra Data, and you'll only pay for data you use. We recommend opting in to Extra Data if you're using Alarm Pro at a location without an internet connection.
.

Note: If you don't opt in to Extra Data and use up your 3GB for the month, Alarm Pro will switch to Alarm Cellular Backup1 which provides access to only critical Ring Alarm security features. When an internet connection is restored, Alarm Pro will automatically switch back to using it. Your 3GB will reset on the first day of the new billing cycle.

Can I use Alarm Pro if I don't have a broadband internet connection at my location?

Yes. You can set up your Alarm Pro using 24/7 Backup Internet1 for your primary internet service. You will get 3GB of cellular data each month, included in your Ring Protect Pro plan subscription. If you need more, opt in to Extra Data. You'll be charged $3 per 1GB of cellular data that you use at the end of each month.

What happens to Alarm Pro when both power and internet service is unavailable?

Your Ring Alarm Pro has an internal battery used for alarm security only. If you don't have any Power Packs and you lose power, your Alarm Pro will switch to the internal battery and shut down most features, including wifi, to conserve power. You'll only be able to arm and disarm your alarm, and if an emergency is detected, the siren will sound. (If you have Protect Pro and are enrolled in24/7 Alarm Professional Monitoring,5 Alarm Pro will also send the signal out to the monitoring center while on battery backup.)

If you have a fully charged Ring Power Pack connected to your Alarm Pro, you'll have access to all of your Ring Alarm Pro features. Tap here to find Frequently Asked Questions about Ring Power Packs.

Can I control my Alarm Pro with an app?

Ring Alarm Pro uses both the Ring app and the eero app. When you first set up your Alarm Pro:

1.The Ring app is used to set up your Alarm Pro on your Ring account, enroll in 24/7 Alarm professional monitoring,5 add Ring devices, and add Shared and Guest Users.
2.The eero app is used to link your Alarm Pro to an eero account, connect it to your modem and set up your wifi network.

After setup, you'll be able use the two apps to manage your Alarm Pro features* and settings (that are available to you) on your own wifi.

*Ring Alarm and all Ring Alarm accessories require a subscription for digital notifications, in-app features, digital arming/disarming, and integration with other Ring, Echo, and third party products. Subscription sold separately. View ring.com/protect-plans for pricing and details.

Ring Alarm Pro Base Station – Setup and Use

blobid0.png

The Ring Alarm Pro Base Station is designed to be the hub of your home, with a Ring Alarm security system, an eero Wi-Fi 6 router,*** and optional battery backup and backup cellular internet add-ons available in case the power or internet go out.

On its own, Alarm Pro is designed to serve as the primary router for your home. Ideally, it should not be added to an existing wifi network, unless you're using an eero Mesh Network, in which case you can add Alarm Pro as an additional router/access point.

The image below shows the most direct way to set up your home network, with Alarm Pro served as the sole router:

Alarm Pro Base Station features

SIREN: The Alarm Pro Base Station has a 104 dB siren.
ROUTER: The Alarm Pro Base Station has a built-in eero Wi-Fi 6 router.***
INTERNET ACCESS: You can connect your Alarm Pro Base Station to the internet using wifi or an Ethernet cable. You can also use cellular data using the 24/7 Backup Internet* feature, available with a Ring Protect Pro subscription. Tap here to learn more.
24/7 BACKUP INTERNET*: The Alarm Pro Base Station has a SIM card that can provide you with a cellular internet connection when your internet goes down, or if an internet connection is not available. Tap here to learn more.
BUILT-IN BATTERY BACKUP: The Base Station has an internal backup battery that will switch on when your power goes out. When the Alarm Pro Base Station is using the internal backup battery, it shuts down most services, including wifi, to conserve power.

You can add up to 4 Ring Power Packs to get more battery backup, and keep Alarm Pro on during a power outage.

ALARM CELLULAR BACKUP: If you subscribe to a Ring Protect plan, your Base Station will also have cellular backup to protect your home when is no power source or main internet available.
Z-WAVE & WORKS WITH RING: You can connect Works with Ring smart devices that use Z-Wave to your Ring Alarm Pro Base Station.
ONE PER LOCATION: You can only have one Base Station per location, but you can have multiple locations – up to 10 – on one Ring account. Click here to learn more about app locations.

Where should I install my Alarm Pro Base Station?

You can install your Alarm Pro Base Station almost anywhere.

Place it on a flat surface.
Make sure it's in a spot that near your modem if you want to use an internet service provider (ISP) as your primary connection to the internet. (In this case, you'll want to connect your Alarm Pro to the modem using the included ethernet cable.)
Choose a location that has the best cellular signal. If your cell phone doesn't have good reception in that spot, your Alarm Pro may not get a strong signal either. (You'll need a cell signal if you plan to subscribe to Ring Protect Pro and take advantage of 24/7 Backup Internet,* and Alarm Cellular Backup.*)
Install in an area where the siren is best heard throughout the location.
Choose a centralized location to improve Z-Wave network coverage and wifi coverage in all directions.
Make sure the spot you choose has good cellular service.

Is there anywhere I should avoid using a Base Station?

Don't use it outdoors or in an environment with extreme temperatures or humidity.
 Don't use near corrosive chemicals.
Don't use it with additional Base Stations. Only one Base Station can be used for each address.
Avoid hiding it in a location where the siren won't be heard if triggered, such as an attic or basement.
We don't recommend wall mounting the Alarm Pro Base Station. Ring Power Packs cannot be wall mounted, and you won't be able to use external battery backup when it is wall mounted.

How does Battery Backup work when the power goes out?

When your Ring Alarm Pro loses power, the internal rechargeable battery will keep the Base Station online for a few hours. You may have some limited functionality while on battery backup, but you can still arm and disarm your Ring Alarm using the Keypad, and if there is a break-in, your siren will still sound. (Ring app access is only available with a Ring Protect subscription.)

If you add one or more
Ring Power Packs, your Alarm Pro Base Station will have full Ring Alarm and eero wifi functionality. Each Power Pack will give you up to 8 hours of power, or more. Tap here to learn more about Power Packs.
.

How does Alarm Pro work when the internet goes out or is not available?

When you add a Ring Protect Pro subscription, you'll get access to 24/7 Backup Internet and Alarm Cellular Backup,* two features that will help your Base Station stay online when there's no internet connection.

If no internet connection is available, Alarm Pro uses 24/7 Backup Internet. You get 3GB of cellular data each month to stay online and keep your Alarm Pro wifi network connected to the internet*. You can opt in to Extra Data in case you need more. Don't worry, you'll only pay for cellular data you use.
If you run out of 24/7 Backup Internet data,* Alarm Pro will automatically switch to Alarm Cellular Backup.* This service is designed to provide a cellular internet connection to send alarm signals when your alarm is triggered. Alarm Cellular Backup* is included in select Ring Protect plans at no extra cost.

When using Alarm Cellular Backup, you'll have access to some alarm security features, like arming and disarming with the Ring app. Wifi and internet connectivity are not available, so Ring cameras and non-Ring devices will not be connected to the internet. If you have professional monitoring, cellular backup will ensure the signal gets out.

How to set up and install an Alarm Pro Base Station
